FHSAA 2A Region 2 Meet Notes
Boys Preview Out of the 16 teams that made it through districts, only 6 will punch their tickets to State; sending 10 teams home. Out of the teams that made it through from Districts; red indicates teams not currently in the top 6. Parenthesis shows current rank in top 24 polls for State.
Computer models show this: 1. Trinity Prep (1) 2. Lake Highland (7) 3. Bishop Moore (13) 4. Eastside (16) 5. Gulf 6. Nature Coast Tech 7. Crystal River 8. The Villages 9. Pasco 10. Montverde 11. Sante Fe 12. North Marion 13. Mount Dora 14. Newberry 15. Tarvares 16. Bradford Your favorite for Region Champion honors has to be the favorite, Trinity Prep. Looking deep in results and trying to find some way to show these guys are not as great as paper shows, there just is no way to find a problem.
(Coach Vinal Trinity Prep) Many of these guys are constant and should take this region over. For many years I’ve seen a district sweep, but a region sweep? On paper they are set up for the perfect score claiming the top 6 spots. Aside from the Trinity Prep dominance much of the top 4 spots look to be secure for a ticket to State. The battle for the last spot is the one that will be most exciting; Crystal River is a mere 17 points behind Nature Coast Tech. Look for these teams to both be "packing up" to try and secure that final spot into the State meet. With regards to an individual Regional champion, it could be anyone on the Trinity Prep team. Trinity Prep runs together as a team, so don’t be surprised if at the end they form some sort of pre-made finishing order. Top 15 individuals will continue on towards State, top 6 teams, only 3.1 miles to decide ! Girls Preview Out of the 16 teams that made it through districts, only 6 will punch there tickets into state; sending 10 teams home. Out of the teams that made it through from districts; red indicates teams not currently in the top 6. Parenthesis shows current rank in top 24 polls for state; Computer models show this: 1. Trinity Prep (9) 2. Lake Highland (7) 3. Eastside (10) 4. Bishop Moore (18) 5. Nature Coast Tech 6. Gulf 7. Montverde 8. Ridgewood 9. The Villages 10. Suwannee 11. Chiefland 12. Sante Fe 13. Trinity Catholic 14. Hernando 15. Keystone Heights 16. Dewitt Taylor On the girls side, the team battle is all by the books.
If you don’t understand cross country running then it might be confusing. A number 7 ranked Lake Highland is behind a number 9 Trinity Prep in the models. This is all because of “front power”; when a team has a super star runner that could run say 18:00 at the State meet (a big meet), it carries much more weight than at a smaller meet. There could be 50 runners in-between that super star runner and another runner who runs 19:40’s at the State meet. But at a smaller meet there might only be 3 runners. That is how Trinity Prep can win the Region title. Only a mere 3 points ahead in the computer models, it should shape up to be a very exciting team battle. The top 6 teams above are just about set. 7th place team Montverde is 149 points behind 6th place Gulf. Safe to say much of the teams in red will be sent home packing. On the individual side Kari Grippo of Gulf comes in as the favorite with a time of 19:06 to win her District meet in what was basically described as a tempo run. The battle for 2nd will be a close one between North Marion's Leigha Torino and Lake Highland Prep's Rachel Stockton, both with a time of 19:40. I give the edge to Stockton who has been a bit more consistent. Top 15 individuals will continue on towards State, top 6 teams, only 3.1 miles to decide. |
